Q) What is the Boiler Scrappage Scheme?
A) The Boiler Scrappage Scheme is a UK Government incentive announced during the chancellors Pre-Budget Report (PBR) in 2009. The scheme will entitle you to scrap your old, energy inefficient boiler in return for £400 towards a new, energy efficient model. The scheme will come into effect from 18th January 2010.
Q) Is my boiler eligible for the incentive?
A) The incentive applies for boilers with energy efficiency ratings of G or lower. Click on the following link to find out if you qualify for the boiler subsidy. As a quick guide, if your boiler is gas fired and has a permanent pilot light, or is over 15 years old, then it is likely to be eligible. Oil fired boilers over 20 years of age are also likely to be eligible.
Q) How much money will I get towards a new boiler?
A) Should your boiler be eligible for the scheme then you can apply for £400 towards a new boiler. Note that the scheme is limited to 125,000 houses this year on a first come, first served basis.
Q) How do I find out the energy efficiency rating of my boiler?
A) SEDBUK provides a searchable database of boiler energy efficiency ratings. Click here to look up yours.
Q) Which countries are eligible for the scheme?
A) Only households in England are eligible for the scheme at ths time due to the devolution of power. The hope is that the local governments of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will run similar schemes in the near future.
Q) Is my electric boiler eligible for the boiler scrappage incentive?
A) No. Unfortunately at the present time electric boilers are not eligible.
Q) Where do I apply for the boiler scrappage scheme?
A) To apply for the Boiler Scrappage scheme you should contact the Energy Savings Trust directly either via their website, or by calling their Act on CO2 advice line on 0800 512 012.
Q) What types of new boilers can I get under this scheme?
A) You must replace your old boiler with an A-rated or equivalent device that uses gas, oil or LPG. A rated boilers with a Passive Flue Heat Recovery Device, Micro CHP units or Microgeneration Certification Scheme-registered biomass boilers and heat pumps are also valid.
Q) Who has to install my new boiler?
A) For your boiler scrappage voucher to be eligible your new boiler has to be installed by an installer registered with a suitable scheme (for example OFTEC or GasSafe).
