What is Boiler Scrappage?
The Boiler Scrappage Scheme is a UK Government incentive to encourage us all to replace our old, inefficient boilers with new ones. The scheme was announced by Chancellor Darling during the Pre Budget Report in October 2009.
The full details of the scheme should be announced early in 2010. Right now we know that the scheme is targeted towards boilers with an energy rating of G or worse and is limited to the first 125,000 homes that apply. So make sure you’re ready to take advantage of this scheme over the next few months.
Why should you Scrap Your Boiler?
There are many good reasons to scrap your old boiler for a new, modern model – even without the government giving you an additional £400 off:
- Modern boilers are much more energy efficient than most older models. This means that you can have the same hot water day in day out for less money – and everyone likes a smaller energy bill! Plus, not only are you benefiting your pocket, you’re also helping the environment by reducing your carbon footprint.
- Older boilers generally take longer to heat up your water to the temperature you want.
- As boilers get older they can silt up internally, causing them to become less efficient. This is particularly prevalent in hard water areas. This means you’ll be spending money to heat silt rather than water.
- It is likely that your old boiler is now outside of its warranty period, which means either you have to pay for repairs when it goes wrong, or pay for an expensive maintenance contract. New boilers will have a new warranty, and often come with free support and checks for the first few years.
So a new boiler should give you cheaper hot water, as well as reducing your carbon footprint. All good news for your house and your bank balance!
